Can Pothos Flower? (Spoiler: Almost Never)

No.

I mean, technically yes.

Botanically, Epipremnum aureum is a flowering plant, and it does have flowers, in the sense that it has the equipment for them.

But your Pothos will not flower.

Not this year, not in ten years, not if you feed it, not if you buy it a moss pole, not if you talk to it nicely.

And if it does, that is not a gardening achievement, it’s a scientific event, and there are people who would like a phone call.

How rare are we talking?

Rare enough that the documented examples get counted.

The figure that circulates among people who follow this sort of thing is around six recorded instances of Epipremnum aureum flowering.

Six.

SIX.

Not six per year, not six per country.

Six that anyone has written down.

The scientific literature is even starker. A study of the plant’s flowering behaviour notes that after the inflorescence observed in 1962, there were no further reports of E. aureum flowering in the wild or in cultivation at all. The handful of cases people point to now have accumulated since, mostly documented by hobbyists rather than in journals.

For scale: this is one of the most widely grown houseplants on the planet. It’s in offices, hospitals, schools and shopping centres in every country warm enough to keep one alive. Millions upon millions of plants. Six flowers.

When one did turn up in a greenhouse a few years back and the owner rang their local agricultural extension, a university researcher called them back the same day, said he had personally never seen anything like it, and arranged to come and examine the plant.

That is a WILD reaction.

Why don’t Pothos flower?

Here’s the bit that makes this properly interesting: it isn’t that conditions are never right. It’s that the machinery is switched off.

Flowering in plants is triggered partly by gibberellic acid, a plant hormone. Research at the University of Florida found that in Pothos, the genes responsible for producing gibberellic acid and the gene that responds to it by starting flower development are both inactive.

Not damaged. Not waiting for the right conditions. Just not running.

Which means your Pothos isn’t declining to flower. It has no functioning route to a flower at all, and no amount of good care builds one.

And you can override it. Spray a Pothos with gibberellic acid and it will flower, because you’re supplying the hormone it can’t make and switching the process back on manually. This is how the small number of deliberate flowerings have been produced.

I am not suggesting you do this. I’m telling you because it’s a satisfying explanation, and because it means anyone claiming their careful watering routine produced a Pothos flower is either mistaken or has been quietly spraying hormones.

The theory that sounds right but isn’t

You’ll see a popular explanation for this, and it’s worth addressing because it’s convincing and it’s wrong.

The theory goes: Pothos flower at maturity, maturity means climbing two or three storeys up a tree with vast split leaves, and the plant on your shelf is a permanent juvenile that never gets the chance. Reasonable. It’s true of plenty of climbing aroids.

It just isn’t true here. The research on E. aureum is blunt about it: the plant fails to flower regardless of where it grows, wild or cultivated, and regardless of how it grows, vertically or horizontally. Give it a rainforest, a tree and fifty years and it still won’t flower.

So this isn’t a plant being held back by your bookshelf. It’s a plant that doesn’t do this anywhere, under any circumstances, unless you hand it the hormone directly.

How To Make Your Pothos Grow Faster

It was taxonomically homeless for eighty years

Here’s how rare we’re talking, told a different way.

Botanists got hold of this plant in 1880 and named it Pothos aureus. In 1908 it was moved to Scindapsus. It then spent decades being shuffled between genera by people who were, in effect, guessing, because the flower is the part that tells you what an aroid actually is, and nobody had ever seen one.

An inflorescence was finally observed in the early 1960s. It was promptly given yet another name, then reclassified again once it had been compared properly to E. pinnatum, and only in 1964 did it settle as Epipremnum aureum.

Eighty-four years. One of the most cultivated plants on the planet, and science couldn’t work out what to call it, because it refused to produce the one structure that would have answered the question.

Nobody has ever bred a Pothos

This is my favourite consequence and almost nobody knows it.

If a plant can’t flower, it can’t be pollinated. If it can’t be pollinated, you can’t cross two of them. Which means that in over a century of commercial cultivation, no Pothos cultivar has ever been produced by breeding two Pothos together. Not one.

So where did Marble Queen, Neon, Pearls and Jade and the rest come from?

Mutations. Some spontaneous, spotted by a grower who noticed one plant on the bench looking different and propagated it. Others induced deliberately, including by blasting plants with gamma radiation at a Florida research centre to see what came out. More recent ones come from tissue culture.

Every named Pothos you can buy is a mutant, a sport, or a lab product. There is no family tree, because there is no family.

To be clear, this is an aureum problem

Epipremnum aureum is the odd one out among its own relatives. The others are fine.

Epipremnum pinnatum is the species most Pothos keepers will already own a piece of without necessarily realising it.

Cebu Blue is a cultivar of it, as are Baltic Blue, Albo-Variegata, Skeleton Key, Marble King and the various aurea and albo variegated forms. The species itself flowers perfectly normally in the wild, producing a proper spathe and spadix, followed by red berries full of viable seed.

It reproduces the way a plant is supposed to.

Epipremnum giganteum flowers more readily still, to the point that botanists note it as unusual within the genus for how regularly it does so.

Flowering is uncommon on all of them in captivity, because a houseplant in a living room is a long way from a rainforest and most of them need to climb properly and reach maturity first. But uncommon in cultivation and structurally incapable are two very different things, and only aureum falls into the second category.

So if you keep a Cebu Blue and it flowers, that’s a lovely thing and a sign you’re growing it exceptionally well. It is not a phone-call-to-a-university event. That’s reserved for the golden Pothos in the plastic pot on your kitchen windowsill.

The bit that makes no sense: it conquered the world anyway

Pothos is classed as an invasive species across the frost-free tropics and subtropics. In parts of Florida it’s on the invasive list, smothering ground and climbing trees where it was never meant to be.

It managed that without ever reproducing sexually. No flowers, no pollination, no seeds, no offspring in any conventional sense.

Every wild Pothos strangling a tree in Florida is, functionally, a piece of another Pothos that got snapped off and landed somewhere warm. The whole global invasion is one plant, cloned endlessly by accident, mostly by humans dumping cuttings.

It’s a plant that skipped reproduction entirely and colonised the tropics by being extremely easy to break and impossible to kill. Say what you like about Pothos, that’s an impressive career.

So what if mine actually flowers?

First, be sceptical. The overwhelming likelihood is that you’re looking at a new leaf. Pothos leaves emerge tightly furled and can look convincingly like a small pale spathe before they open out. Give it a few days and see whether it unrolls into a leaf.

A real Pothos inflorescence is an aroid flower, the same basic structure as a peace lily: a pale spathe wrapped around a central spadix. If that’s what you’ve got, and it’s not unfurling into anything leaf-shaped, then:

Take photographs. Lots, from several angles, with something for scale.

Contact somebody who cares. A botanic garden, a university botany or horticulture department, or an agricultural extension service if you’re in the US. They may want samples, and they will almost certainly want to see it. The person whose greenhouse Pothos flowered got a call back from a university researcher the same day.

Post it online. Seriously. r/botany will identify it within the hour and tell you exactly who to contact. That’s precisely how the best-documented recent case unfolded.

Don’t cut it off. Obviously.

And if it goes on to fruit, pay attention, because one of the documented cases did something extraordinary on top of everything else: the seeds began germinating while still attached to the fruit. It’s called vivipary, it happens in mangroves and occasionally in cereal crops, and on a plant that had already done the near-impossible by flowering at all, it’s showing off.

Broadly, yes. Both are aroids, so the structure is a spathe wrapped around a spadix. A peace lily’s is bright white and prominent, whereas Pothos inflorescences are smaller and a duller cream or greenish.
