Pothos are the easiest plant in your house to propagate.
This is a plant that colonised the tropics without ever managing to produce a seed, purely by being snapped off and dropped somewhere warm.
Which means the interesting question isn’t can you. It’s which method to use, and what the trade-offs actually are, because they’re not what most people tell you.
The one rule that matters: you need a node
Everything else on this page is preference. This bit isn’t.
A node is the point on the stem where a leaf attaches. It’s the same spot the aerial roots emerge from, and on a Pothos it usually looks like a faint line running around the stem, slightly raised, often with a small brown nub beside it.
That line is where new roots come from. No node, no roots, no plant.
The zombie leaf
You’ll see photos of a single Pothos leaf sitting in a jar of water with roots coming off it, offered as proof you can propagate from a leaf alone. You can’t.
A Pothos leaf with no node will produce roots. It will sit there, green and healthy-looking, rooted, for months. And it will never grow anything, because there’s no growth point on it. It’s a cut flower with a root system. A zombie leaf.
Any time someone claims they’ve propagated a Pothos without a node, what almost certainly happened is that a sliver of node came away with the leaf. That’s not a leaf cutting, that’s a very small stem cutting.
So before you cut anything: find the node. Cut just above one, leaving the node itself on the piece you want to root.

The methods, briefly
Each of these has its own guide. Here’s what each one is and who it suits.
The propagation box, which is what I actually use
Take a vine, cut it into individual nodes, lay them on damp soil or moss in the bottom of a clear plastic box, put the lid on and leave it somewhere bright and warm for a few weeks.
That’s it. No water changes, no transition, no acclimatising roots afterwards. The roots that develop are already soil roots, so potting up is uneventful rather than a setback.
A few holes in the lid for airflow, and a handful of springtails if you have them, since they’ll deal with any mould before it becomes a problem.
How To Propagate Pothos In Soil
Water
Put a cutting in a jar so at least one node is submerged, and wait.
It’s the most popular method for good reason: it’s the easiest to set up and you can watch the roots appear, which is a large part of the appeal. It’s also the fastest route to roots, particularly if you use nutrient water rather than plain, and change it often.
The catch is what happens next. Water roots and soil roots are structurally different, so a proportion of them die back when you pot the cutting up, and the plant stalls for a few weeks growing replacements.

Straight into the parent’s pot
The classic advice: take a cutting and poke it back into the soil it came from.
It does work. I don’t recommend it for beginners, because the node needs the surface of the soil to stay consistently damp, and keeping the top damp usually means overwatering everything underneath it, including your original plant’s roots. You’re risking the parent to root the child.
If you want to do it, do it inside a box or a clear bag so the humidity does the work instead of the watering can.
Wet sticks
A wet stick is a node with no leaf on it. A bare chunk of stem.
They root perfectly well, and they matter more for Pothos than people realise, because long bare vines with the leaves lost off the bottom are one of the most common Pothos problems there is. Those bare nodes won’t grow leaves where they are, but cut into pieces they’ll each become a plant.

Air layering
You root the node while it’s still attached to the parent plant, and only cut it free once it has roots.
Overkill for most Pothos, since they root so readily anyway. Worth it when you’re taking a large cutting you’d be upset to lose, because the cutting is never without a life support system.
If you’re already growing your Pothos up a proper moss pole, this is happening automatically whether you meant it or not. Every node that roots into the moss is an air layer you didn’t have to set up.

Fastest to root is not the same as fastest to a plant
This is the bit I’d most like you to take away, and I only worked it out by testing it.
I once rooted a Philodendron brasil cutting ten different ways at once to see which was quickest. Nutrient water won by a distance. It wasn’t close.
But the cutting that ended up in a terrarium, in soil, was one of the slowest to root. And while everything else was still busy growing roots, that one was already pushing out new leaves.
Slowest to root. First to actually be a plant.
Pothos behave the same way, and it reframes the whole question. Roots in a jar are not the finish line, they’re an intermediate step you have to pay for later during the transition to soil. Warmth, humidity and light get you to a growing plant faster, even when they lose the race to first root.
So if you want roots quickly, use nutrient water. If you want a plant quickly, use a box.
How Long Does Pothos Propagation Take?
Which should you use?
If you’re propagating for the first time: prop box. Nothing to remember, nothing to transition, very hard to fail.
If you want to see roots quickly: water, with nutrients, changed often.
If your Pothos is a long bare vine: cut it into single nodes and treat them as wet sticks in a box.
If you’re taking one big cutting off a plant you love: air layer it. Slower, fiddlier, and nothing is ever at risk.
If you want the cutting to live in water permanently: just leave it in the jar. That’s a valid end state, not a failed propagation.
Growing Pothos In Water: Everything You Need To Know
What every method needs
Whichever route you take, the same four things decide whether it works.
Warmth. Warmth matters more than light for rooting, which surprises people. A heat mat makes a noticeable difference if you’re impatient.
Humidity. High humidity is why boxes work. A cutting has no roots to drink with, so anything you can do to stop it losing water through its leaves helps.
Light. Enough to photosynthesise, not enough to cook a cutting in a sealed box. Bright, not blasting.
Patience. More on that below, but the single most common reason people think propagation has failed is that they’ve been checking for nine days.
