A cutting with less chlorophyll needs more light to gather the same amount of energy. So the more white your cutting has, the brighter a spot it needs, which is the opposite of how people usually treat delicate-looking cuttings.

I’d use a propagation box for the rooting itself, since the humidity and stable warmth do most of the work. But put it somewhere properly bright, and if you don’t have that, use a grow light.

A grow light has a useful side effect here: it throws off a bit of heat, and warmth speeds rooting more than light does. You get both from one purchase.

What actually happened when I tried this

I should be straight with you about how this went for me, because “follow these steps” implies a reliability I can’t claim.

I have a heavily variegated Pothos. I have tried to propagate it a lot of ways.

Most of them failed, and the culprit was thrips. Highly variegated Pothos are weaker plants, weaker plants attract pests, and thrips absolutely loved this one. Cuttings that should have rooted got chewed instead.

The only method that got me anywhere was putting it in a terrarium. Stable warmth, high humidity, enclosed, consistent.

That’s genetics, and it’s why you’ll find people online insisting confidently that variegation always develops with maturity, and other people insisting equally confidently that a green cutting is green for life. They’re both describing a plant they owned.

What this means practically: a green-looking cutting is a gamble, not a guarantee either way. If you want variegation, root the node under a variegated leaf and improve your odds. Don’t take a plain cutting hoping it’ll turn, and don’t bin one that starts green either.
