You will see the damage long before you see the animal.
Spider mites are about half a millimetre long, which is to say they are a dot. Not a small insect. A dot. You can be looking directly at a colony of them and register nothing except that the leaf seems a bit dusty.
They’re also not insects at all. They’re arachnids, with eight legs, more closely related to the spider in your bath than to anything else in this silo. Which is a fact I find unhelpful at 11pm.
What spider mites look like
If you get close enough, or use your phone camera zoomed in, you’re looking for tiny oval specks, usually pale green or yellowish, often with a darker spot on each side. Some turn orange or red at certain points in their life, which is where the “red spider mite” name comes from.
They gather on the undersides of leaves, which is why a plant can look fine from above while the colony underneath is well established.
The fastest way to confirm it: hold a sheet of white paper under a leaf and tap the leaf sharply a few times. Anything that falls off will look like specks of dust or pepper on the paper. Watch for ten seconds. If the specks start walking, you have spider mites. Dust doesn’t do that.
What the damage looks like
Fine pale speckling. Spider mites puncture individual cells and empty them, so the damage starts as a scatter of tiny pale dots, like someone has gone over the leaf with a very fine pin.
A dusty, washed-out look. As the dots multiply, the whole leaf loses its depth of colour and takes on a greyish, matte quality. Lots of people assume the plant needs a wipe.
Bronzing. Heavier damage turns the leaf a dull yellow-brown.
Webbing. Fine silk strung between leaves and around stems. This is not an early warning sign, it’s a late one. Webbing means a large, established colony that has been there a while.
Spider mites or thrips?
In practice, and I mean this helpfully rather than dismissively: it doesn’t matter much.
Both produce pale, stippled, washed-out damage on the leaf. There are differences if you know what to look for, thrips damage tends towards silvery streaks with black specks of waste while mite damage is finer and more evenly scattered, but plenty of experienced growers can’t tell them apart from a photo either.
The reason it doesn’t matter is that the response is the same. Wipe the leaves down, repeatedly, until whatever it is gets fed up and leaves. That’s my approach for both and it has served me well.
The one distinguishing sign that’s worth knowing is webbing, because thrips don’t produce it. Silk means mites.

The hot and dry thing is only half true
Every article you read will tell you spider mites need hot, dry conditions. My old place was cold and damp and I had them anyway, for years.
Here’s how I’d square that, because I don’t think the standard advice is wrong so much as incomplete. Warm and dry conditions make spider mites breed dramatically faster, which is why infestations explode next to a radiator in February or on a windowsill in August. That’s real. But “conditions where they multiply fastest” is not the same as “the only conditions in which they can exist,” and a cold damp house still has warm dry pockets in it, along with still air, dark corners and undisturbed dust.
Which brings me to the thing I actually blame.
They love dust
Dusty leaves and spider mites go together.
A layer of dust gives them shelter, makes the leaf surface a more sheltered microclimate, and makes it much harder for anything that eats mites to hunt them. Undisturbed corners of a room collect dust, and undisturbed plants collect mites.
This is why leaf cleaning does more work against spider mites than against anything else in this silo. You’re not just removing the mites you can’t see, you’re removing the conditions they like.

Leave the actual spiders alone
Worth saying, because the name confuses people: house spiders are not spider mites and are not a problem.
Real spiders eat mites. A spider that’s set up shop near your plants is providing a service. Rehouse it if you must, but it isn’t the thing damaging your Pothos.
Will misting help?
You’re on a site called Nobody Mist Me, so you can probably guess where this is going. But I want to be fair, because spider mites are the single best case anyone can make for misting, and I’d rather deal with the strongest version of the argument than a straw man.
The argument goes: spider mites do worse in humid conditions, water disrupts them, so misting should help. And there’s something in that. Water hitting a leaf really does bother a spider mite.
The problem is what misting actually does. Spraying a fine cloud of water at a plant raises the humidity around it for a few minutes, then it evaporates and you’re back to the humidity of the room. To hold humidity high enough to bother mites, you’d need to be misting more or less continuously, forever. Nobody does this. Nobody could.
So the bit of misting that works isn’t the humidity. It’s the water physically hitting the leaf and knocking things off.
Which means: take a damp cloth and wipe the leaf instead. It does the same thing, except it also removes the mites, the eggs and the dust in one go, and it doesn’t stop working the moment the water evaporates. Or put the plant under the tap and blast it.
Misting is a weaker version of a thing you could just do properly.

How to get rid of them
1. Wipe and rinse, repeatedly
Take the plant to the sink or shower and blast it, undersides first. Then wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.
Weekly, for at least a month. Mite eggs hatch on a rolling schedule, so a single clean removes a generation and leaves the next one coming.
This is unexciting, free, and more effective than most of what gets sold to you.
2. Soap or oil
Insecticidal soap or neem oil, which kill by suffocation. A drop in a one litre spray bottle, applied in the evening, since both make leaves more likely to scorch in strong light.
Get the undersides. If you only spray the tops of the leaves you have essentially watered your plant.
3. Predatory mites, which is where this gets interesting
Spider mites are the pest where biological control works best, because the predators available are specialists and they’re very good at their job.
There are two you want to know about, and they do different things.
Phytoseiulus persimilis is the emergency service. It eats spider mites and essentially nothing else, it works fast, and it will clear an active infestation impressively quickly. The catch is that once it has eaten every spider mite, it starves and dies out. That’s not a fault, it’s the trade: total commitment, no persistence.
Amblyseius californicus is the insurance policy. It’s a generalist, so it survives on pollen and other small prey when spider mites are scarce, which means it sticks around and stays in place waiting for a problem. Slower against a heavy infestation, much better as ongoing cover.
The obvious move is both: persimilis to deal with what you have, californicus to hold the ground afterwards.
Two things worth knowing. Predatory mites in houseplants are a fairly new practice and the field is moving quickly, with newer strains selected to reproduce faster so a colony establishes before the pests get ahead. And most sachets now come with guidance on what to feed them, so you can keep a colony ticking over between problems rather than buying again each time.
If the idea of deliberately introducing more bugs into your home is putting you off, I understand, but they’re smaller than the pests they’re eating. Once the sachets are hung on the plant you will not see them again. They’re mites, not something substantial like a beetle you’d notice crossing the carpet.
4. Keep the plant healthy
A stressed plant releases hormones that make it more attractive to pests. Sorting out light and watering is doing pest control work, and it’s the part people skip because it doesn’t feel like taking action.
When you see webbing, stop treating and start cutting
Webbing means the colony is large and long-established. At that point you’re not managing a problem, you’re negotiating with a settlement.
Cut the plant back to the soil. Pothos regrow from the base quickly, and the chop takes the entire population with it in one go. Take a few cuttings from clean growth if you want insurance, and check them properly first.

Prevention
Wipe the leaves. The single highest-value habit for this specific pest.
Check the undersides. Everything happens down there, and a glance at the top of the leaf tells you nothing.
Watch plants near heat sources. Radiators and hot windowsills create the warm dry pockets where populations accelerate.
Quarantine new plants for a couple of weeks before they join the collection.
Don’t panic about your Pothos specifically. Spider mites are more of a problem on Philodendron than on Pothos in my experience, so if you keep both, you’ll likely see it there first.
